World War One and The Middle East Essays - 1845 Words
Introduction Over the course of human history, wars have always created, destroyed or enveloped nations, states or empires. Examples of these include the Final War of the Roman Republic, which culminated with the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE, to the Franco-Prussian War of 1871 which created a unified German state. However, World War One is known to have had the greatest impact on human civilization. It dragged in almost every continent into the conflict, halted global trade, led to the demolition of four empires, and gave nationalism everywhere a boost. One interesting factor about the First World War is the extent to which it had a tremendous impact on the Middle East. Many westerners today would only remember it by reading Erich Mariaâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The link to the Middle East was bridged when the Ottoman Empire decided to join the Central Powers. Their reasoning behind this decision emanated from the fact that the Germans were seen as guaranteed victors since they wer e already the most industrialized state in Europe, had the experience of defeating France in 1871, and could move troops and equipment quickly where needed via their vast railway network. Another second factor was the proximity of Russia and the ambitions of the Austrians in the Balkans. Regarding the Allies, they assumed that the war would be quick and decisive just as the Central Powers assumed as well (Implementation of the Schlieffen Plan) and had no need for an alliance with the Ottomans but they did inhibit plans to distribute the Ottoman provinces when the war was over amongst themselves. However, they suffered a series of setbacks. By the fall of 1914, the British, French and Germans were all bogged down in trench warfare in Belgium and France. Furthermore in 1915, the Allies, in an attempt to alleviate the burden of fighting on the Western Front, decided to land troops in Gallipoli with the objective of knocking the Ottomans out from the war. The campaign ended in disaste r. According to an article by Adam Burtle from United States Citizen Ambassador to the United Nations, structural violence is ââ¬Å"Systematic ways in which social structures harm or otherwise disadvantage individualsâ⬠. One element that structural violence has is that it is difficult to identify specific cause or person who are responsible for (Adam Burtle, 2016). For example, if people cannot receive social services since they are not literated, or 10000 African Americans die just because of they are African American, it means that they cannot receive same level of support as whites (Trimble, 2016). In Canada, there are 634 First Nations, Inuit and Mà ©tis communities. These indigenous people have history of being structurally violated. One of them is ââ¬Å"residential schoolâ⬠(Trimble, 2016). Residential schools were established aiming at isolating indigenous children from influence of their own culture and assimilating them to the mainstream stream Canadian culture. Today, some kilns are more that 500 feet long. Parallel improvements in crushing and grinding equipment also influenced the rapid increase in production. Since grinding process consumes most of the energy various grinding systems like ball mill/vertical roller mill/roller presses has been the result of technological developments. Blending takes place in silos with air blown in from the bottom to aerate the contents. Various new designs were also developed to increase the efficiency of mixing. HOW CEMENT IS MADE? :- Two main methods of cement manufacturing were prominent, the Dry process and the Wet process. Dry process now has almost replaced the wet process since wet process consumes high thermal energy for drying the moisture. When rock is the principal raw material, the first step after quarrying in both processes is the primary crushing. Mountains of rock are fed through crushers capable of handling pieces as large as and oil drum. The first crushing reduces the rock to a maximum size of about 6 inches. The rock then goes to secondary crushers or hammer mills for reduction to about 3 inches or smaller. It is then ground in ball mill to fine powder with other ingredients like clay/iron ore/bauxite to create a combination of values for silica/alumina/lime etc in the mixture. If the process is wet, the grinding goes on in with water so that slurry is resulted after grinding. This slurry is further mixed in mixers and pumped to kiln. For a dry process kiln, the ground powder is sending to blending silos for uniform mixing of components added during the grinding stage. This blended material is feed to the preheater/calciner. The preheated is a group of cyclones placed over one another where in material comes down and hot gases goes up heating the material and calcining it in the process. Calcinations means liberating carbon dioxide and converting calcium carbonate to Calcium oxide. Calciner is nothing but a duct added to give more residence time to material for calcinations. This partially calcined material then comes to the kiln, which is refractory lined rotating tube having burner fitted in the other end. This burner fires coal/oil/natural gas to create a temperature of 1600 Deg cent at the discharge end. As the material in the kiln rolls down towards the discharge end, various reactions takes place amongst the components resulting in a mass known as clinker. This clinker is then cooled in coolers. The coolers are either planetary type or grate type. Grate coolers of modern time are much efficient resulting in better heat recuperation and allows reusing this heat in the kiln. The cooled clinker then either goes to storage silo or clinker yard. From the clinker yard it is taken for grinding. In case ordinary Portland cement is made only gypsum(4-6%) is added before grinding. In case of Portland pozzolona cement additives like Flyash/brick etc are added. Grinding again is same like for raw material grinding with ball mill or with latest technologies like vertical mill/Roller press etc. The cement powders then taken to packing plant or discharged from silo to a bulk loader directly. Many disputes have risen over the series contents, especially in regards to its effect on young children. J. K. Rolling Harry Potter series has been questioned for its supposed inappropriate content and Its frequent use of Which supporting philosophies and has been banned and challenged In many schools and libraries worldwide since its publication in 1998. J. K. Rolling shows the ultimate victory of good overcoming evil through messages that embody love and courage In her novels J. K. Rolling expresses that the evil she portrayed In her novels was intentional. She utilizes evil characters such as Lord Voltmeter who has the ability to make others his slaves by dwelling in their bodies because she couldnt pretend that when dealing with evil, no one gets hurt (Rolling). The novel was banned in Zealand, Michigan shortly after its publication. Gary L. Fenniest, Superintendent of schools in Zealand, made a restriction on reading, sherries in school environment in any kind of way after he first read the books. Many concerned parents started to complain when their kids would go home and tell them scary stories about witches and goblins that involved spells. : Rev. On November 22 1999, parents and the superintendent decided to take action against this potential harm by making some firm pronouncements. They decided that the Harry Potter series cannot be displayed in school libraries, and if the student desires to read them, they must receive their I OFF As a result, the American Booksellers Foundation For Free Expression, an organization that completely disapproved of the decision, lashed out against the school decision to attics a minority of students and parents by banning the Harry Potter series because it would deprive a majority of students whose parents do not have an issue with this. As the organization became more adamant in its position, the advisory committee recommended reviewing the decision of Fenniest and the school staff. On May 1 1, 2000, Fenniest accepted its recommendation and retained the only the classroom readings for elementary school students. However, the Harry Potter series began to face an increasing number of opposition as the years passed. In the very next year, in March, Harry Potter was banned once again in the I-J. Carol Rockford, Principal of SST Mars Island Church of England School in Chatham, Kent expresses her opinion about the Harry Potter series as a part of the school curriculum. Rockford, speaking on the issue, states that the nature of the stories does not fit in with the schools church ethos (School Bans Harry Potter 1). Rockford and the other school staff felt that the books did not match up with their religious beliefs and clashed with the teachings of the bible. In her opinion, they promote what the Bible clearly condemns, I. E. , witchcraft and sorcery (Banes, 5). Expanding on the motive behind the decision, Rockford states, the Bible is very clear and consistent in its teachings that wizards, devils and demons exist and are very real, powerful and dangerous and Gods people are told to have nothing to do with them. We are a Church of England aided primary school which means the church ethos is very important to what we do. (Robinson). Rosewoods strong position about the Harry Potter series in the school library shelves sparked uproar among many. National Secular Society stated that it is wrong to remove the series from schools because it had always been an imagination booster and banning these books would be doing students a great disservice. INS General Secretary Keith Portentous makes a comment that Childrens imaginations have been nourished for centuries with stories of wizards, witches and fairies (School Bans Harry Potter 1). From the US, Author J. K. Rolling defended her books and said that the books are in fact moral. She states that the good and evil is hat shapes the story, and that the novels needed to include such ingredients to honestly tell their stories. (School Bans Harry Potterl). This did not stop Carol Rosewoods and the school staffs firm decision. In 2005, Genuine County, Georgia, Laura Mallory argued to ban the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Cabana from J. C Magical Elementary school, where her four kids attended school. Originally from Louisville, she argued that since teachers do not assign books such as the Bible for student reading, Harry Potter should not be assigned either Mallory thought that the kooks are harmful to children. She said, The good characters lie, cheat and steal and are not punished. The stories encourage children to perform spells and promote Which. (Diamond). Mallory trusts the school system to protect her precious young children and she certainly doesnt want them indoctrinated into Wisconsin (Ban Harry Potter or face more school shootings). On December 14, 2006, the Georgia Board ruled that there is no reason for the books to be banned, thus stating that the parent failed to prove her point that the series promotes the Which religion and therefore that the books availability in public schools does not constitute advocacy of a religion (Harry Potter ND the Prisoner of Cabana). The books were also banned in Wakefield, Massachusetts when Rev Ron Barker, SST. Josephs pastor, removed the books from the school libraries claiming that witchcraft and magic are not appropriate enough to be a part of a Catholic school. While many agreed with Barker, many other students and parents were upset about the decision because it was made without notice. Rick Hudson, a parent who has sent his three children to SST. Josephs School, expressed that he was upset that this was done in the first place but he was more upset that it as done in secret. A mother, who asked that her name not be used, said, l think the spirit of what hes doing is the right thing. I believe he is sincerely interested in the childrens well-being. (Luggage). She trusts Barkers Judgment and believes he would never do harm for the students. Ever since its original publication in 1998, J. K. Rolling Harry Potter has sparked much controversy over the years. As one of the most banned books, it is no surprise that many parents and school boards challenge the presence of the books in libraries and school curricula. But within different contexts a set of activities which are against a law may be accepted as commonplace such as speeding on the highway and similarly there are deviants who go against the norms of the majority but are not criminals. When distinguishing between ââ¬Ëcrimeââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëdeviancyââ¬â¢, John Ha ganââ¬â¢s classifications provide a good reference point with the regards to individual acts. He gives the three dimensions on which deviancy can be measured, these include the perceived harmfulness of the activity to the society or any individual, the consensus of the society as to whether deviancy occurred and severity of action proposed against the perpetrators. In the case given, the individual in question Mr. McCollum had a self confessed obsession with trains and places related to trains. Suffering from Aspergerââ¬â¢s Syndrome, the manââ¬â¢s great interest in locomotives is not unusual for someone with the affliction. The problem arose when he tried to impersonate ticket wardens, steal a locomotive and indulge in other delin quent activities like joy riding and trespassing train control towers to satisfy his need to be ââ¬Ënear trains or a train yardââ¬â¢. These activities got him arrested several times, yet he went against the terms of his parole in 2006 because of his obsession with trains. As far as social deviance goes, his behavior was potentially dangerous as it involved interfering with the mechanisms of sophisticated machinery which could endanger the people using or working with them. The consensus that his behavior is different from socially established rules is similarly high as safety protocols are given the highest importance in modern society and people breaking these regulations are looked upon very negatively. It is difficult to classify Mr McCollumââ¬â¢s actions as consensus crimes, however, because there is disparity in the opinion for the severity of his castigation- the reason being his suffering from Aspergerââ¬â¢s syndrome. His advocates claim that even though Mr. McCol lum was aware that his actions were not acceptable at large he still felt a compulsion to perform them. This is true of people affected by Autism spectrum disorders which are one of the most common neurological disorders, and most common developmental disabilities in our society.
